Social Justice Solutions: What Can YOU Do?

In recent events with Tyre King, Terrence Crutcher, and Keith Lamont Scott, I see a lot more people ready to take actions and bring some REAL change into their communities. I decided to take this out of my drafts and cut my research short in order to post this.

Here are ways you can bring change into your community:
(Please keep in mind that you must remain patient through the process and be connected with the right people in order to see change; the little things matter and add up)

1. Attend your local community council meetings and talk to your council members. E-mail them, call them, etc. Have conversations voicing your concerns, give suggestions and input for community events. Community unity and working together is essential.

2. VOTE!!! Locally and Nationally. Period.

3. Protest and bring awareness. There's sooooo many things I can say for and against this but it does work and gets people talking. Having these important conversations and listening with an open ear and mind are important in tackling prejudices and racist mindsets that people may not know they have embedded.

4. Boycott businesses who do not support or represent you. Send them letters, call them out, and making sure you put your money where your mouth is. 4a. Support and put your money into minority businesses. It helps that community.

5. Do your research on community officials, police chiefs, etc. They live in your same community. Getting to know them and how they view/think about things can also help you with the things above.

6. Join local and national organizations who have events and listings for things in the community to help that community grow or bring awareness and change to what matters. They usually have goals or a mission statement but helping out is better than sitting back.

7. Look up resources. I joined CampaignZero, Move On.org, and other online communities dealing with social activism, racial discrimination, and even women's rights. Simply typing your interests in Google and seeing what is available to you from your computer screen.

8. Social media activism. It's small and may not seem like it's working but it is! Communicate with other social activist, celebrities, and even journalists. Keep in mind that perspectives matter and you only have a certain number of characters/space to use.

Lastly, check out some former blog posts for bringing some changes in my community and surrounding areas: Public Safety Committee Petition (please share and make sure others are sharing it as well), Defying Odds Protest, and Participating in a Ride Along with CMPD. Also, remember to keep in mind the importance of conversation especially with Allies.

Remain safe, prayed up, and peaceful. As usual, comment below with other ways and resources we all can do to stay involved and active in our communities.

Sincerely,
AMC
