A Way OUT: Get Out Thoughts

It's been more than a month since the movie "Get Out" was in theaters and I'm still being requested to make a post about it. SENSATIONAL! (to the requests and the movie as well)

Now if you have not watched the movie, of course, there WILL be SPOILERS but here are a few of my thoughts:

There are different race dynamics that come into play in this movie. It examines the relationship between a black man and a white woman, interactions/roles of black women, as well as their relationship/interaction with white women, each race's role in racism in this country, interactions of white men & people in general with black men, and so much more. I saw the movie twice in theaters: one with a close friend of mine and the next with a Caucasian co-worker. Two different experiences from both viewing, not only because I was watching it with two completely different types of people, but from what I didn't catch the first time I watched it.

I will say the movie experience was still good both times but I felt like I had to prep my white colleague prior to walking in. The first time I caught SOME race related things and with the help of my close friend I caught a few more. For example, the deer. The second time I watched it I realized that deer appeared more times than I thought. Rose's father, Dean, stating "that's one less deer on the road" paralleling to "that's one less black man in the streets" when a black man is killed was a shocking aspect to think about. From the KKK mask in the car seat, to the flash from the cellular phone, to the fruit loops separated from the milk, Behold the Coagula, and every other symbolic image in the movie made the movie more exciting and educational for me. Any movie that causes me to analyze and research is number one in my book!

I love that the movie had EVERYONE talking no matter their race! It was something for everyone to dissect, analyze, interpret, and talk about... I think that was the major point of the movie! Jordan Peele created a new movie genre called Social Thrillers which I am now a fan of! I love social thrillers because I have the opportunity to do all of those things as well as ignore the barriers that have stopped before from discussing race issues.  My Caucasian co-worker who isn't necessarily afraid of talking about race yet doesn't fully understand the dynamics of it, was able to understand it a little bit more and even had a conversation with a person at a bar. Progress... slight but be a step is still a step.

Since the movie was so ironic and holding many racial relationships true, I decided to break this down into multiple posts examining these symbols and relationships displayed in the movie.

We have to GET OUT of the idea that we should remain silent and not talk about race.
